I'm Cheap

With a capital, bolded, underlined C...and this cheap is on the border-line of ghetto.

Yesterday while sorting the mail at work I noticed one of the envelopes had gone through the stamp reader upside down. This meant the red ink that normally indicates where the letter sent from was across the bottom of the envelope instead of the stamp. Since the stamp didn’t have the red markings, I cut it out to use again. That’s what makes me ghetto-cheap. But here is my moral dilemma.

Should I reuse the stamp? I mean, it technically was used but then again, no one can tell. If I just throw it away, that’s a good $ .63 just wasted. (Extra postage stamp…I could write a friend in Canada!) But really, it is a used stamp. So what do all of you say?

Before you answer though, here is your moral dilemma. I watched my mom do this when I was little. So if you call ME cheap and dishonest, really you are name calling Mama Mia. (and she reads these blogs.) So NOW what do you think?

Publisher correction: I read this blog to Mama Mia and she immediately insisted she no longer does this. (I told her "but that doesn't work in my blog" so the comment had to be added here)

I thought about reusing a stamp once but I couldn't figure out how to get it off without ripping it, so I gave up. Just chuck it.

My dishonesty preference is music I get from friends. I'm trying to quit. It's not easy.

hahahahhohohehe oooooooooooh charlotte... ok so here is what I would have done. Used the stamp without saying a word. Bad I know, but here is what I think the right thing to do is. Throw it away... its not wasted because it served its purpose in life: delivered a piece of mail to you!

So would you need to pay tithing after you use the stamp? Oh the horror!

I used to try and reuse stamps when you could soak them off of envelopes but I quit when I realised that it violated one of my basic principles: When I did a cost benifit analysis I discovered I was working well below minimum wage. If I'm gonna cheat the government, it's gonna be for more than minimum wage.
You don't pay tithing on stuff you steal. Isn't that in the ten commandments or something. Kelly's Dad

It's one of those little things you learn and make improvements on during your life.

When Elder Oaks was called to be an apostle in 1984, there was a short mention of his integrity and how he had chided his daughter for trying to remove and reuse an uncancelled stamp that had come in the mail. The statement hit home and I immediately stopped.

Charlotte, you have an amazing memory. You were very young when you observed me doing it!

wow all ive got to say is...are we really discussing the morality of sending an already used stamp? ..and who thinks to save a stamp unless they are 5 and have a stamp collection? listen i will buy u a book of stamps AND envelopes to make this matter cease. and mom, im pretty sure i saw u soaking envelopes to get the stamps when i was young too..and i dont remember any stamp collections. i wasnt born until 1987 though.

just think of what stress and extra hours these poor veteran postmen are now having to go through as they now (after reading this blog) will have to individually go through and postmark every envelope. thats a hard job for a man with athritis. Simply to prevent dirt-leg cheap ppl from cheating the govt. Don't get mad when regular stamps (the ones that are 39-cents now) rise to the original debated price of 63-cents all because the post office cannot sustain itself finacially BECAUSE OF STINGY PENNY PINCHERS!
