Twenty Buckaroos

Twenty Dollars: How would I spend $20? I'd go to one of my favorite stores and purchase some fish. Not the type to cook but the colorful living type to go in my fish tank. Did you know that I've had my fish tank running for a month with no fish? Of course not...I didn't blog that information.

I really enjoy watching fish. I could spend hours sitting in front of an aquarium and have spent entire lunch breaks at the fish shop just enjoying the colors and movements of my marine friends. I purchased two frogs and some fish after my move to Georgia and chronicled their deaths in earlier posts.

After taking a little break, I decided to try my hands at fish again. I bought a new filter, poured in gallons of purified water, and purchased gold fish to acclimate the tank. By the end of two weeks, I'd flushed each fish down the porcelain slide to their final destination.

I'm beginning to worry. It seems I kill everything I touch. And remember last years attempt at gardening? I harvested a total of three beans. Three beans! I think my green thumb is laced with cyanide. It's a good thing I don't have children.

Hey wait...today's post isn't supposed to be about me! I am to announce the winner of the random drawing. Drum roll please.....

I entered the range 1 - 31 for a random number. It spit out 12. So Mona, you are the lucky winner of a $20 giftcard. Email me at charlottalove (at) gmail (dot) com to claim your prize. Oh, and I noticed you wanted to spend the money at a book store. If you get a chance, look to see if they sell Keeping Pet Fish Alive for Dummies. I have a, uh, friend, who needs that book.

The latest environmental report says we are overfishing and marine species are disappearing at an alarming rate. I'd try to develop that green thumb if I were you.

Congrats, Mona!

That picture is AWESOME. I wish I took it! *envy*

I kill everything I touch, with the exception of humans.

My eldest is a fish/aquarium expert. In fact, I am "fish-sitting" his three aquariums while he's away this weekend. He belongs to an on-line forum - lots of great advice there. I'll ask him for the url when he gets back and let you know.
(I hope I don't kill any of his prize fish...)

They were probably diseased when you got them. I bought four feeders about six years ago, three died the first week, and the fourth is still alive and well! Try again!
Congrats Mona.

Sorry about all your dead animals...wow thats sound REALLY sympathetic! I almost won a goldfish at the fair at the mall!! :) Does that cheer you up? You could go next weekend and try to win one.

We have four fish that we've managed to keep alive for the past year. I have no idea what kind they are, but they swim and eat... I've only cleaned the tank once and it still looks clean. We keep it in the 5 year olds room... she loves it. Good luck with the not killing of fish.

Hi there- I tracked you down through Happy Meals and Happy Hour... and had to sypathize with you fish problems. When I was younger I had tanks full of fish- they lived while I ignored them and all was happy in the world. I tried again last year and NOTHING worked. I might just as well have flushed the money directly down the toilet and skipped the trip to the store. So, recently I thought back on those childhood fish and remembered they came from the tanks at our local Woolworth's store. Don't know if you're old enough to remember a Woolworth's- but there were always a couple dead fish floating in the tanks. And it hit me. Aha! I'm getting this fish at snooty pet stores. I need the hardy fish that have a few friends stuck to the filter in the back. So, off to Wal-mart we went. We purchased several fish which are still alive. So, perhaps your problem has been high maintenance fish from the fish store. They expect nice PH and blah blah blah. Go with the goldfish from the store with the worst tanks imaginable. They will survive. Sorry so long and good luck.
